7 Home Décor Trends for 2020

by Pam Silvia

1. Rounded-edge furniture

If pop culture in the 2010s is largely defined by nostalgia, home décor in 2020 banks on it. Rounded-edge sofas and couches were a fixture in '80s living rooms, and the retro silhouette is expected to make a comeback in our sitting furniture and coffee tables, combating the square edges that have long ruled in the (now) days of yore.

2. Dark jewel tones

With Pantone announcing “Classic Blue” as the Color of the Year for 2020, you can expect sapphire hues adorning everything from clothing to couch throw pillows. Other jewel tones like emerald green, amethyst purple, topaz blue and citrine yellow can evoke a smoldering feel with a touch of glitz. Bold-colored walls are expected to replace the safe, neutral leanings of this past decade.

3. Eclectic wall frames

Minimalism is out. Maximalism is in. Gone are the days of off-white focal pieces and brass hardware, as 2020 is the decade of being bold and brash in our home décor.  We think a wall of gold ornate frames of varying shapes and sizes is a perfect marriage of vintage and modern. If you’re feeling particularly daring, go for frames that are of varying wood, metal and plastic finishes and colors—the quirkier, the better.

4. Velvet

We have a soft spot for this trend. Velvet is predicted to take over your home furnishings in 2020, covering everything from sectional couches, sofa chairs, decorative pillows and duvet covers. We recommend pairing your velvet statement pieces with simplistic yet colorful wall art and more modern furniture, like a glass coffee table with brush-metallic legs or a black-wood dresser.

5. Greco Roman art

With rampant Greek and Roman imagery in designer-brand fashion over the past few years, it’s only natural that it seeps into our home décor as well. Roman-inspired head busts and Grecian wares will give any room a touch of regal sophistication. Or, conversely, if you’re hoping to nurture a more hodge-podge aesthetic, a random placement of a Julius Caesar head can add whimsy.

6. Biophilic design

There is a wide consensus among interior-design gurus that biophilic design will take over home-construction blueprints starting in 2020. Defined by its focus on cultivating a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors, this trend will have people opting for real (not faux) foliage, opening a (literal)  window to natural light, purchasing cascading water fountains and showcasing nature-evoking art pieces—like wall ornaments fashioned from branches and tree-stump stools. We think either the room connected to your backyard or your balcony space makes the perfect playground for biophilic design.

7. Bold-pattern backsplashes

Some say mosaic may be out—we beg to differ. But we’d implore you to retire the earth-toned, subway-tile backsplash that has haunted bathrooms for far too long. Go for Portuguese or Moroccan styles instead! Brimming with bold colors and floral-reminiscent designs, these backsplash patterns will complement accessories you choose in a coordinating accent color and will brighten up kitchens and washrooms for years to come.
